They are now being upgraded to provide an upstream path (from the home to the head-end). New challenges arise in using the upstream channel since the available bandwidth is low and the noise levels are high. Di erent variations of the reservation Aloha protocol have been proposed as the MAC protocol to e ciently share the scarce upstream capacity. The e ciency of the reservation protocol highly depends on the capacity assigned to the reservation channel. In this paper we present a control mechanism that dynamically adjusts the operating parameters to the current load on the system. The control mechanism does not require any framing structure and is built around a \sea of mini-slots". The performance under both static and highly dynamic loads is close to optimum. The station implementation remains particularly simple and the downstream control structure is also simple. Results are given here for xed length data units (ATM cells) but the algorithm extends very simply to variable length MAC frames.

Adaptive MAC Protocol for a Cable Modem

متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Qos over Catv Networks Based on the European Cable Modem Protocol (dvb/davic) for the Support of Delay- Sensitive Applications
This paper presents an overview of some key QoS features that will enable the DVB/DAVIC protocol with a superior performance and efficiency at the Media Access Control (MAC) layer for the support of delay-sensitive applications. We show the deficiencies of the basic reservation request mechanism provided by the DVB/DAVIC MAC protocol and present a performance optimisation via simulation results...

متن کاملExperimental Evaluation of FAST TCP Performance and Fairness in DOCSIS Cable Modem Networks
In this paper we present experimental results evaluating the performance and fairness of FAST TCP in a series of tests involving realistic low rate network access scenarios. Links both using the DOCSIS cable modem medium access control (MAC) cable modem and simple low rate links were investigated. We seek to compare our expectations from theory with the behavior of an actual access network impl...
متن کاملComparison of Contention Resolution Algorithms for a Cable Modem Mac Protocol
A reservation-based MAC protocol has been adopted by standards bodies as the basic protocol for data communication within the upstream channel of a cable plant. The available capacity is divided in two separate channels. One is a random access channel, or contention channel, used to send requests to the head-end, with the possibility of collisions occurring therein. When collisions happen, they...
